Philip McKenzie is the Lecturer of Oboe at the Challey School of Music. Currently, he is a member of the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra and is a frequent guest performer with the Fargo Moorhead Symphony, FM Opera, and Bemidji Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and spent his formative years as a professional with the Virginia Symphony for eight seasons. Additionally, he performed with the Virginia Opera and Lake George Opera, and toured with the Wind Orchestra of the Americas. In addition to performing, he maintains teaching studios in Grand Forks and at his home in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
Phil is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Dakota, where he studied with Douglas Bairstow, principal oboe of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He continued his studies as a teaching assistant to Daniel Stolper at Michigan State University while pursuing his master’s in performance. He has had additional coaching with John Mack, Felix Kraus, Stevens Hewitt, and Thomas Stacy.
