The NDSU Gold Star Marching Band presents SOUNDS OF THE GRIDIRON, a free concert at FARGODOME on Sunday, November 3rd at 2 p.m. The band will march and perform selections from 2024 Pre-game and Season Halftime Shows plus favorite Bison Pep Band tunes. Great family friendly concert!
The show is free and open to the public, who are invited to cheer on the young men and women who help keep the energy high at Bison games.
A silent auction will be held prior to the concert start beginning at 1:00PM on the home side/east concourse.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Joseph Murphy was the saxophone professor at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania from 1987-2022. At various times he was also director of bands, department chair, and taught a variety of courses.
He received the Bachelor of music education from Bowling Green State University (OH), and the Masters and Doctorate degrees from Northwestern University. Dr. Murphy was the music director of Tiffin (OH) Calvert High School from 1983-85. In 1985-86 he received a Fulbright Award for a year of study in Bordeaux, France where he received a Premier Prix. His June 1996 solo recital at Lincoln Center was positively reviewed in the New York Times. He has performed in all 50 states, 8 Canadian provinces, 25 countries, and 6 continents. He has performed in New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Sydney, Athens, Tokyo, Bangkok, Johannesburg and at 11 World Saxophone Congresses.
He has premiered over 100 new works and is a clinician for the Selmer Corporation and Rico Corporation and has recorded 10 CDs. He has played with guitarist Matthew Slotkin in Duo Montagnard since 2002. Murphy’s memberships include Music Educators National Conference, Music Teachers National Association, North American Saxophone Alliance, National Association of College Wind & Percussion Instructors, Phi Mu Alpha, and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Join us on campus for a free guest artist recital featuring pianist Oda Voltersvik. Her recital will include piano works by lesser-known and underrepresented Nordic female composers including Elfrida Andrée, Laura Netzel, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Inger Bang Lund and Pauline Hall. Oda will also conduct a piano masterclass from 12:30 – 1:30 PM Tuesday, October 29, in Beckwith Recital Hall as part of the NDSU Piano Studio Event Series. Both events are free and open to the public.

ABOUT ODA VOLTERSVIK:
Oda Voltersvik – “(…) an extraordinary Scandinavian artist!” (Per Brevig, Musicians Club New York) – has performed at important venues internationally including Carnegie Hall & Scandinavia House (NYC), Wigmore Hall & St Martin in the Fields (London), the Norwegian Opera House and from 2014 – 2024; artist in residence for a week at the Edvard Grieg museum in Bergen. As a solo and chamber musician she has held recitals for important concert societies and taken part in festivals internationally, including several solo recital tours and concerto performances in the US. Her CD releases “NEO”, “Firebird” and her piano duo recording “Khoreia” have received great reviews. Oda received the honourable Norwegian Arts Council` s work grant for younger and newly established artists for 2021 & 2022. She is a 1st prize winner of the Bradshaw £ Buono International competition (2017) and finalist in the Jaques Samuels competition (2016). For her solo and chamber music projects, she has been awarded grants from the Arts Council Norway, Fund for Performing Artists, Music Norway, Bergen City and Fegerstens foundation among others. Oda is a member of an active piano duo; the Volt&Potenza duo and has been project leader of several successful concert series for her Volt Ensemble among others, including Volt Classics held in Bergen. Oda holds a Master in Performance from the Royal College of Music London and an Artist Diploma from Trinity Laban Conservatoire (with distinction from the Intercollegiate Jury).

The NDSU student pianists and faculty Dr. Tyler Wottrich and Dr. Robert Groves gather to perform for one another, discuss pianistic issues, and experience guest performances and masterclasses every Tuesday 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall while classes are in session.
Starting this 2024-2025 Academic Year, we are opening a number of these Studio Classes to the public, especially young musicians, teachers, and homeschool families in the form of our new “NDSU Piano Studio Public Events Series.”
The performance from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, will feature a studio recital by multiple pianists from NDSU.
Fee free to bring a lunch and connect with NDSU piano students, faculty, and other members of the Fargo-Moorhead musical community in the Challey School of Music Atrium adjacent to Beckwith Recital Hall.
