NDSU Opera
NDSU Opera presents fully staged and costumed performances of operas with orchestra in Festival Concert Hall every spring. Recent productions have included HMS Pinafore (Gilbert and Sullivan), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten), and Gianni Schicchi (Puccini). NDSU Opera also presents operas such as Dido and Aeneas (Purcell) and Venus and Adonis (Blow) at the NDSU Baroque Festival.
NDSU Opera Workshop presents staged and costumed scenes from operas with piano accompaniment in Beckwith Recital Hall.
Roles in NDSU Opera Theatre and Opera Workshop are assigned based on open auditions. NDSU Opera roles are typically filled by NDSU music graduate and undergraduate students.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2015
In August 1959, Britten decided to compose a full-evening opera for the reopening of the refurbished Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh in June 1960. As this left no time for a libretto to be prepared anew, he chose to adapt with Peter Pears Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, though as he admitted at the time, he had always admired the original play and was excited by the various levels of action between the different groups of characters….
Gianni Schicchi 2014
Chaos ensues in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi after an extremely wealthy man dies and the family searches frantically for the will. After realizing he left his possessions to the local monastery, the family encourages Gianni Schicchi to impersonate the dead man long enough to change the will. In the end, Schicchi agrees, but with consequences the greedy family had not foreseen…
